As such, comprehensive dysphagia interventions cannot consist solely of muscle exercises, maneuvers, compensatory postures and diet modifications. To ensure the highest quality of care is achieves, clinicians must consider the other factors that contribute to swallowing difficulties, such as esophageal abnormalities, acid reflux disease, and pharmacology. Presented by and for the clinician in the real-world setting, this clinically relevant seminar will cover in depth:
-Esophageal screenings and the role of the SLP
-Acid reflux disease and LPR in adults and children
-Drug induced dysphagia
-Model for pneumonia risk and prevention
-Water protocols
-Oral hygiene programs
-Xerostomia
 Objectives:
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the esophagus and understand how swallowing and voice disorders occur from disorders of the esophagus
  • Explain Laryngeal-Pharynfeal Reflux and its role in voice disorders
  • State diagnostic and treatment options for patients with LPR and Acid Reflux Disease
  • State the differences in the various symptoms of LPR and Acid Reflux Disease as seen in infants, children, teenagers and adults
  • Explain the theoretical basis behind the free water protocol

  • Evidence-based Practice in Sensory Processing Disorder: Subtypes, Assessment, Diagnostic Issues and Intervention - August 9 - 10, 2012 - Cost TBD - 2 Day--8:00-4:30

Presenter Name: Dr. Lucy Jane Miller

Course Description: The comprehensive, 2-day seminar focuses on Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), a problem that research estimates to affect 5-16% of children. SPD is often misdiagnosed as ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Even more common, SPD is not diagnosed as a disorder at all...instead the child’s issues are attributed to “bad behavior”, “poor motivation”, “social-emotional problems”. or “poor parenting.” This workshop will focus on differentiating the six subtypes of SPD as well as screening and assessment of SPD. The presentation will highlight videotaped examples of direct treatment and explain the new STAR Treatment Model focused on relationships and engagement, arousal regulation and sensory integration therapies, developed by Dr. Lucy Jane Miller and her team at the STAR Center in Colorado. In addition evidence-based research related to SPD will be reviewed, highlighting studies completed by scientists at the SPD Foundation and in the collaborative SPD Scientific Work Group, founded and chaired by Dr. Miller. The SPD SWG consists of 35 members from research universities such a Harvard, Yale, Duke, MIT and many others.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
    1. Identify the six subtypes of SPD.
    2. Cite evidence-based research related to identification and treatment of SPD.
    3. Discuss general principles of the new STAR Treatment Model and explain the advantages of the model over traditional treatment options for SPD.
    4. Explain and describe the problem solving approach to pediatric therapy intervention (e.g., clinical reasoning) for parents and teachers using Bialer and Miller’s recently published frame of reference, A SECRET. (See No Longer A SECRET (2011) Arlington, TX.: Sensory World.)
    5. Identify and discuss screenings and assessments for SPD.
    6. Discuss issues related to diagnosis of SPD, including the current status of the effort to have SPD accepted by the DSM committee when the DSM-5 is published in 2013.

"My favorite things about working at Children's Care are: my co-workers and our Rehab Center team, the fact that with the variety of disciplines represented at the rehabilitation center, I am continually learning something new that I can apply to my job and therapy skills, and the variety of clients I can see in one day."
