Each child is unique. They have unique needs. As they grow and develop, their minds and bodies respond in many different ways. Their needs change with the seasons as they become ready for more challenges. One place that all children can learn and grow is in the water. Teaching a child to swim can be fun and educational, which has led to the development of a program called Adaptive Aquatics.
With Adaptive Aquatics the possibilities are endless. Each child has individual goals designed to adapt to the needs of the child. The benefits of this program can be as small as getting a child to put their face in the water, to as big as has big as having them ready for total independence in the water. Specialized staff teach basic water skills while incorporating educational and social skills as well. Students learn to dive underwater by identifying weighted and colored numbers to pick up and bring to the pool’s side. In doing this, number identification, counting and color recognition are incorporated into their lessons. Students also learn the importance of communication by following directions and taking turns while playing games and doing various activities.
Physical fitness is a very important benefit of Adaptive Aquatics. Endurance swimming and different strength concepts to help increase heart rate and make swimming a fun and healthy experience for all are additional elements of this program.
With its own indoor pool located in the basement, Children’s Care has a growing Adaptive Aquatics program with certified and trained instructors along with special equipment to meet all the needs of our students. We work with parents, therapists and physicians to make sure the child is getting the most out of their aquatics experience. With many of our students we provide water therapy including range of motion, stretching, increase strength and balance, lessen muscle and joint pain, and improve dexterity and fine motor skills.
Adaptive Aquatics is a fun and beneficial program that is continually growing. We are constantly finding new equipment and teaching techniques to accommodate all the needs of our students. Our newest instructor, Lisa Laleman brings with her an extensive background to ensure success with all children. Check out her credentials:
