Stop and Think for a Second…
Have you ever stopped to think what life would be like if you were living in poverty? Perhaps you already are. Your list of basic needs would include many items such as money, food, clothing, shelter, etc. Now, consider what life would be like if you were living in poverty - AND had a child with special needs. Children with special needs require many areas of assistance including medical services, educational services, therapy services - and assistive equipment like wheelchairs, communication devices, leg braces, and more. And that’s just naming a few. So, not only would you be unable to provide basic needs for you and your family, but your special child might go undiagnosed with their condition and would suffer that much more. It’s an unbearable thought.
Startling Statistic
The need to help those in poverty is quickly evident. According to the Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data book, 19% of all children in the U.S. live at the poverty level (income below $19,806 for a family of two adults and two children in 2005). One in five children lives in poverty in the United States - a startling statistic and another unbearable thought.
Today You Can Change Things
Children’s Care is a partner in Blog Action Day 2008, whose mission this year is to join thousands of other blogs on one day, October 15, in an effort to raise awareness for those in poverty. Poverty is a complex issue, cutting across ethnicities, beliefs, ages, and countries. One simple way might be a donation to a local charity organization or foundation that helps families. Other ways to help might be volunteering your time to serve meals or to become active on finding more long-term solutions.
If Take the first step. Pass this on to those you know. Talk about what you can do. And act.
